BAM Christmas Guide 2017

Christmas has well and truly hit Bristol and in amongst all the merriment there are some wonderful family arts events taking place. From Christmas theatre to jingly sing-a-longs, here are our top picks for the holidays…

Building Baubles

Drop in and create your own paper house for the Christmas tree. Also a great opportunity to check out all the goodies on offer at HOME Shop, showcasing artworks and gifts by some of Bristol’s best artists.

Grayson Perry: The Most Popular Art Exhibition Ever!

If you haven’t caught this fantastic exhibition yet, go now before it’s too late! A master at combining art with social commentary, this one will get you all talking. Perry tackles subjects such as Brexit and masculinity head on in an engaging and accessible manner. And the kids will adore the big, pink motorbike!

Sail with Santa

Join the elves for a fun filled boat trip round the harbour on the hunt for the big man himself! Once you’ve found him he’ll come onboard with mince pies and gifts for everyone. Lots of trips already sold out so don’t leave it too late to book.

The Little Matchgirl & Other Happier Tales

Hans Christian Andersen brought to life through music, puppetry, laughter and magic. Watch as the Little Matchgirl sparks new tales with each match she strikes. A wonderful experience for ages 8+ and their families.

Sunday Cinema at The Zoo

The Zoo will be showing The Nightmare Before Christmas in their screening room in the run-up to Christmas. Film tickets also include day access to the zoo so it’s a full day out!

There’s always lots to stretch your imaginations at these brilliant sessions. And who doesn’t love a trip to the warehouse of dreams? There’s also Under 5s Make A Mess on 19 & 21 Dec (10:15-11:45) and Mini Makers on 19 Dec (13:45-14:45).

Kid Carpet’s Snow Globe

Join the Bristol legend that is Kid Carpet on a snowy adventure. He never puts on a dull show and you grown ups will enjoy it just as much as the nippers. For ages 3 – 7 and their families.

Made in Bristol Gift Fair

Support local traders and head down to the final instalment of this festive fair, featuring some of the region’s best designer-makers. You can also head over the road for the Harbourside Christmas Market while you’re there.

Paddington & The Snowman

A magical, musical adventure for all the family. Listen to tales of Paddington Bear ready by CBeebies star Pui Fan Lee and accompanied by music from the Welsh National Opera Orchestra. Then after the break watch classic tear jerker The Snowman and enjoy the live orchestral accompaniment.

Christmas Creativity Day

Create Christmas cards, tree decorations, a plate for the big man’s mince pies or something from your own imagination in this fun creative day led by Brave Bold Drama.

Children’s Double Bill: ((( ON PA ))) and Adventure Bureau

This will be a morning to remember as Rachael Dadd and ICHI invite you to become the orchestra with them and take you on a musical journey complete with ball games and live drawing. Then Adventure Bureau will be up to some improvisational music making and story telling.

Very Merry Poco Christmas Sing-a-long

Our very good friend Poco Drom will be getting you all in a right festive flap with a mix of Christmas classics and his very own ditties. You’ll all be wriggling, bouncing and merry in no time. Festive wear highly encouraged!

These wonderful sessions are put on by the RWA and local artist Abigail Reed. Always a great way to explore different techniques as a family in a relaxed setting.

Let’s Make Art Workshops

Join the always inspiring Let’s Make Art for these Christmas workshops. Choose from Mini Pom Pom Wreaths, Mini Doll Trinket Necklace & Accessories or Hand Stitched Bag & Making Jewellery… or even better, just do all three!

Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2017

This exhibition is always a great one for grabbing the kids’ attention as well as taking our city kids on an adventure to frozen wastelands and tropical paradises. A good one for those strange in-between Christmas and New Year days!

Big Screen: The Muppet Christmas Carol

Arguably the best Christmas movie for kids? Wrap up warm, pack a flask and huddle together to watch it on the big screen. Limited space due to the ice rink taking up space so get there early – or book skating at the same time!

I Am Making Art: Shapes, Patterns & Prints

These lovely sessions are held in the Spike Island Café and open to people of all ages, with or without kids! This month artists Demi Insall and Olivia Jones will help you design, collage and stencil patterns for wrapping paper, cards and tags using basic print techniques.

George & the Flight of the Imaginees

Join Brave Bold Drama for an adventure around the globe. George must use all his imagination to stop those trying to snuff out his creativity. Suitable for all but particularly good for ages 4+.

Beauty & the Beast

Theatre company New International Encounter will take you on a funny and heartwarming adventure they retell this classic tale of Belle and her encounter with the cursed beast in the forest. For ages 5+. Check out our full review here.

The Ugly Duckling

Travelling Light tell this well-known Hans Christian Andersen tale with storytelling, live music and lots of inventiveness. This show is suitable for ages 2+ and their families

The Snow Baby

Soap Soup Theatre present The Snow Baby, a magical children’s theatre show with beautiful puppetry, imaginative storytelling and music that will give you goosebumps – a gentle show exploring family, love and loss, with lots of music, confetti and funny bits for the whole family to enjoy!

Create a hullabaloo and scare away bad spirits in this traditional wassail. A beautiful place to spend the last day of 2017.
