BAM Guide: Easter Holidays 2019

In between all the chocolate, there’s plenty of opportunities to get creative with the kids and try something new. Here’s some of the best family arts events happening in Bristol and beyond over the Easter holidays…

So You Think You Know About Dinosaurs

Pit your dinosaur knowledge against that of dinosaur aficionado Dr Ben Garrod. An interactive, educational and highly entertaining show for children aged 5-12 and their families.

Easter Sculpture Festival
19 – 22 Apr

Tickets £8 (under 18s and students go free)
This year the festival will have more sculptors exhibiting than ever before as well as a children’s trails, live chainsaw wood carving and willow workshops. Expect greek goddesses, foxes, musicians and more, all in the beautiful grounds of the Botanic Gardens.

Jay Foreman’s Disgusting Songs for Revolting Children

This show regularly sells out at the Edinburgh Fringe and will treat you to an hour of cheeky songs, poems and theatre for children (and the grown-ups will belly laugh too!).

Making Things Move Workshop

To coincide with their open studio weekend, Caraboo are putting on this fun workshop where children can make moving animals on sticks and thaumatropes, optical toys that were popular in the 19th century.

Painting with Chemistry

A chance to explore this early photographic process where chemicals are painted onto photographic paper to create other worldly images. Children must be accompanied by adults.

Lino Printing for Beginners

This one isn’t a children’s workshop, but one that older teenagers might enjoy. Use traditional and modern techniques to create your own block and then use this to print some designs onto paper and a bag.

Tree House Day

This sculpture day will have you pouring your own plaster base and then creating a multi-platformed tree house with ladders, furniture, bunting and much more. This is aimed at ages 7+ but there are also some Play & Explore Holiday sessions for ages 2-6.

The holiday line-up at Children’s Scrapstore looks as juicy as ever with spin painting, races for space, castles, birds, dragon eggs, minecraft and much more. Reasonably priced sessions for all ages. If you don’t have membership, make sure you head down there for the Spring Open Day when the warehouse will be open to non-members!

Collaborative Painting Family Taster Session

Exactly what it sounds like! Spend some time together as a family creating your own collaborative art work. The finished pieces will then go on show in the gallery until 14 April when you take them home. A wonderful way to explore creativity with your kids.

To compliment the current Sculpture Open Exhibition, there are a number of sculptural workshops and drop-ins happening over half term. Have a go at clay modelling, willow sculpture, modroc, foam carving and balloon sculpture. Check the website and book if it’s not a drop-in as these are bound to sell out.

I Am Making Art

These monthly sessions allow people of all ages to work with artists to explore different themes. This month artist collective Uniform will be bringing the sounds of New Zealand to Bristol through the use of field recordings, instruments and listening techniques.

Baby Art Hour

Play with colour, shape, texture and learn easy ways to create, using simple methods and materials. A great one for those of you with kids under 5 looking for something toddler friendly in the holidays. Booking essential.

Bug Takeover with Let’s Make Art

This dance theatre performance for children will take you on an adventure filled with Boings, Whooshes, Tick-Tocks and Cacophony, with the characters finally learning to listen out for that silence. The holy grail of parenting!

Pop-Up Puppet Club

Inspired by the British river wildlife, children can make their very own puppet, guided by professional puppet maker Lizzie Johnson. The morning session is for ages 4-6 and the afternoon is for children aged 7-11.

Pick up an activity sheet from the Bristol Cheesemonger and crack the code on this window trail around Wapping Wharf. Perfect if you’re down that way for a trip to the M Shed, Spike Island, SS Great Britain etc.

Step inside the planetarium as the lovely grounds of Hauser & Wirth are transformed into a landscape of scientific discovery! There will be creative making, face painting, rocket launching, local food and drink and lots of family activities to enjoy. There is also a family day at the start of the holidays too.

This new show will see Granddad and Briarbush the old dog fox team up to try and save the woods from being destroyed by other humans. Puppetry and story telling from the Pickled Image theatre company.
