BAM October Half Term Guide 2018

And just like that, it’s here! October Half Term is always packed full of family arts fun… here’s what caught our eye!

Stomping Stories: Funnybones

Have fun, play games and explore the wonderful Ahlberg classic in this stomping story and craft walk around the cemetery. Ages 3+ (younger siblings welcome).

Day of the Dead Workshop

Tickets £7 (adults free)
Decorate your own Calavera de Azucar, learn how to make traditional paper flowers and style up your own sugar skull mask. This will be a lovely end to the half term. There’s also an evening screening of The Nightmare Before Christmas.

FEAR at Avon Valley

Scare mazes, street theatre, fire shows, fairground rides and a kill zone, whatever that is. This is the ultimate Halloween experience so obviously not for the littles but for those of you with teens, this is the place to go. Quite frankly it sounds horrific but obviously that’s the point!

Witch & Wizard School

Learn how to mix potions, make spells and fly a broomstick in this great immersive event. It’s on the pricier side but you get entry to the park and all the Spooky Fun activities included so it’s a full day out. Highly recommended.

Bonfire Night 2018

Boiling Wells gets a UV makeover with live music, bar, BBQ, s’mores, dancing and more. This is a firework free event so good for younger families. Always sells out so book your tickets soon!

Bristol Film Festival: Dumbo

To coincide with Circus 250, this is a chance to visit the museum after dark, be enchanted by live performers and enjoy this classic film in the main hall.

Fabric Africa Family Fun

Join print making and textile artist Flo Awolaja for a one hour session where you will learn about the rich history of African textiles and have a go at making your own creations.

Mexican Day of the Dead

Learn about traditional Día de los Muertos celebrations, join in with craft workshops, get your face painted and celebrate with music and dance.

Drawing Club

Three days of drawing in celebration of The Big Draw! Collaborative drawings, drawing by torchlight, drawing by touch, with pencil, charcoal, ink, colours, fingers, silly games, serious studies and everything in between. Each day will be different so keen drawers can do all three!

Half Term at the Scrapstore kicks off with a free Super Saturday session, before a run of great Holiday Stay & Play sessions exploring Skellingtons, Ghost-busting, Constellations and more. Join the lovely Dixon Does Doodles for an evening of spooky pin puppetry. Expect lots of spiders, monsters, cats, witches and pumpkins as you doodle your own terrifying design.

Get your own sea worthy injury from professional make up artists when you visit SS Great Britain this half term. These are so realistic that our neighbour was horrified when we came home last year! For older kids there’s also an after dark Spooky Ship event on 31 Oct – 3 Nov.

Scratch & Sniff Cinema: The Curse of the Were Rabbit

Scratch ‘n’ sniff your way through this Aardman classic, actually my favourite of the W&G films. We were lucky enough to see this as part of the Encounters Film Festival and it was lots of (incredibly stinky) fun. There’s a free Spooky Animation workshop in the cafe from 10:30 on the Saturday too. Other half term family friendly films are A Wrinkle in Time, The Wizard of Oz and The Witches.

OKIDO Art & Science Workshop

Join Let’s Make Art for an action packed workshop where you’ll be making costumes based on a mystery mammal (clue: it only comes out after dark!). There is also a Family Takeover and a fun mirror drawing project to enjoy over half term. There is also more half term costume fun from Let’s Make Art at The FMLY Store in Bruton if you fancy heading that way instead.

Yana & the Yeti

Absolutely beautiful story of a refugee child in a strange land where no one speaks her language, told with amazing puppetry and music. It’s recommended for 5+ but Arlo was 3 when we saw it and he absolutely loved it. It’s really is a magical piece of family theatre.

Pumpkin Festival

Story telling, live music, face painting, craft activities, pumpkin carving and weird shaped gourds at the beautiful Hauser & Wirth. There are also more pumpkin carving workshops the day before.

Tie Dye a T-Shirt

Learning how to tie dye is a proper teenage ritual in my book! Lots of other great workshops for kids and teens on offer including super hero costume making, sewing and dressmaking, wand making and more.

Behind the Scenes: Halloween

See behind the scenes and learn all about the more ghoulish artefacts at the museum. Pickled stingray, anyone?

And don’t forget, there are also some great exhibitions on at the moment including Clowns: The Eggs-hibition at Bristol Museum and Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2018 at M Shed plus lots of events for The Big Draw.
