BAM Summer Half Term Guide 2018

Half term is on the horizon and there’s lots going on to keep you all busy. Once again, not much going on at the big museums but some great events from our wonderful independents and if you’re up for exploring a little further afield.

Teddy Bears’ Picnic

Join Let’s Make Art for some fun with your favourite cuddly friend! Ages 2-6 can make a bed and blanket for their teddy in the 11:00-12:00 session, while ages 7+ (or younger confident stitchers) can sew a simple bear toy to keep in a little wooden box. Bring a picnic and head out onto the front lawn afterwards!

The sessions at the Scrapstore allow children to experiment with lots of different materials and use their imagination in ways that they might not be able to at home. The half term the workshops include Junk Band, Bugs Bugs Bugs and Cosmic Space. It’s also one of the few places that continues their under 5’s offerings during the holidays which is great if you still have toddlers to entertain!

Withywood PhotoWalk Challenge

Tickets £2 each (adults & children)
This walk will take in some stunning views of Dundry Hill and set you some open-ended photography challenges as you go. You’ll end up at Creative Workspace where you can share your photos or create some artwork using vintage images and maps. This one is probably best for slightly older children who are up for the walk or you can take smaller ones in a sling.

There are lots of other events taking place at Creative Workspace over half term including slime making and family theatre. Check out their events page so see what’s coming up.

Slime Workshop

The slime craze hits the Kiln! Make your own then see who can blow the biggest slime bubble. And why not flex your creative muscles further and paint some pottery while you’re there? Ages 3+. The first one sold out so make sure you book early!

Captain Barnacle Pirate Panto!

Big Screen Bristol: Back To The Future

If you’ve been biding your time, waiting to introduce your kids to one of the best movie’s of all time, here’s your chance! Take a rug, picnic supper and give them the big screen experience.

Pop-Up Puppet Club

This session is for parents and children to create their very own puppet together based around themes of harbour life. Led by puppet maker Lizzie Johnson.

Children’s Sewing Workshop

A sewing workshop for ages 8 to teens. Total beginners can learn how to use a machine and make a basic project like a bag or cushion while those who have sewn before can learn new techniques and make a pencil case or some pyjama bottoms. All materials are included!

Wild Words: Vivaldi’s Dream

Family theatre telling the story of Vivaldi, a young girl discovering her imagination is a world of screens! Told through live music, storytelling, film and song. There is also a workshop beforehand where you can do some singing and learn about musical electronica. Suitable for ages 6+.

Glorious Greeks

A storytelling and music show for ages 3-10 that will take you on an Odyssean adventure, with a puppet making workshop thrown in! There’ll be greedy monsters, savage cyclops and sweet singing sirens.

A new show from Tessa Bide with puppetry, live music and animation. This is the story of a young boy meeting his new disabled sister for the first time and tackles themes of anticipation, disappointment, acceptance and love.

Pinhole Photography Family Takeover

Drop in family pinhole workshop where you can also explore the current exhibition Collected Shadows.

Play games, get messy, explore different techniques and make up your own colourful characters and stories all based around the current photography exhibition Collected Shadows. Led by Let’s Make Art.

Pom Pom Keyrings Workshop

Tickets £5
Open to anyone aged 4+ (adults included!), you’ll learn how to make pom poms and then turn them into keyrings. Like the name suggests! And while you’re in that neck of the woods, make sure you check out the Alexander Calder exhibition at Hauser & Wirth.

Family Saturday

Free (booking recommended)
Join an interactive tour of the Alexander Calder exhibition and then take part in some creative activities inspired by the work. Aimed at children ages 6-14 though younger ones are welcome if supervised. This should be a really great experience!

Half Term: Year of the Sea

Make some junk boats and see which ones float and which don’t. There are also lots of great exhibitions at the museum including one on female photographers and some of Cerith Wyn Evans’ light sculptures that your kids will love as much as you!

Spring Blossoms

Various times
Make a picture of spring blossoms using mixed media in this creative drop-in session. Maybe take some inspiration from the Kaffe Fassett exhibition that is currently showing at the museum.
